Cementitious coating: what it is, advantages and tips for using

Cement is not just for building houses. It is also a finishing option. That’s right! We are talking about cementitious coating.

This type of coating has been very successful these days and there are good reasons for that.

Want to find out? Come follow the post with us!

What is cementitious coating?

Until recently, a house with exposed cement gave the impression that it was unfinished, under construction.

However, things changed completely from the moment cementitious coating began to gain ground.

This type of coating is made with cement powder and the addition of other materials, such as glass, natural stones and quartz crystals, for example, but which vary according to each type of coating.

With this mixture it is possible to create countless patterns of colors, formats, textures and applications.

The cementitious coating is still characterized by the form in which it is found on the market.

Some models come ready-made from the factory, usually sold in ready-to-install boards, such as hydraulic tiles and 3D models.

Other models of cementitious coating, such as burnt cement and granilite, are handcrafted at the place of application.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of cementitious coating?

Benefits

Durability and resistance

Undoubtedly, one of the greatest advantages of cementitious coating is the high durability and strength of the material.

Cement, the main raw material for this type of coating, can withstand the constant traffic of people and even vehicles very well, being an option even for garages.

This type of coating also has excellent weather resistance, withstanding sun, rain and wind.

Modernity

For those who want to give an air of modernity and sophistication to the environments, you can also count on the cement coating.

Nowadays this type of coating is preferred to create modern spaces, going far beyond the industrial style.

Elegant living rooms and cozy bedrooms, for example, are easily designed using cement flooring.

The trick for this is knowing how to combine it with other textures, especially noble ones, like wood.

Low heat retention

Another super advantage of cementitious coating is its low heat retention, that is, it does not heat up (or heats up little when compared to other types of coating).

That’s why the cement coating is very suitable for use in outdoor areas, such as balconies, backyards, gourmet areas and, of course, by the pool.

It is even worth mentioning that the cement coating is also a little rough, which makes it a great ally in damp and wet areas such as the pool, so you can prevent people from slipping and getting hurt.

Disadvantages

Porosity

Porosity can be seen as an advantage or disadvantage of cementitious coating, depending on where it is applied.

In the case of outdoor areas, for example, this feature is an advantage, as water does not accumulate on the floor, preventing accidents.

On the other hand, indoors, such as bathrooms, the porosity of the cement coating can make cleaning difficult, as it will absorb other dirt, including grease, in addition to water.

Cost

The cost of cementitious coating also needs to be carefully considered, especially if you need to save money.

Some types of cementitious coating are well into account, such as burnt cement, however, as they require skilled labor, the cost can rise considerably.

And that brings us to another disadvantage of this type of coating: not everyone is able to apply cementitious coating. A poorly executed design will lead to cracks, splits and fissures.

So even if you need to spend a little more, consider hiring an experienced professional.

Cleaning and maintenance

Depending on where the cementitious coating is applied, maintenance is a breeze. Just a broom with soft bristles, in the case of the floor, or a cloth dampened with neutral detergent for the walls.

But if the cement coating is applied in damp areas, such as the kitchen and bathroom, or outdoor areas, cleaning can end up being a little more complicated.

This is because the cementitious coating tends to absorb liquids and dirt that accumulate in the innermost parts of the coating.

Cleaning in this case may require an extra dose of physical effort to scrub the floor or wall or, depending on the situation, even rely on a car wash.

Where to use cementitious coating?

Outdoors

The cement coating is very welcome in the finishing of floors and external walls, giving modernity and style to balconies, balconies, terraces, gardens, gourmet areas and around the pool.

The cement cladding still looks amazing as an option for the facade of houses, delivering a modern architectural project with strong visual appeal.

It can be applied on boards or as a monolithic coating, depending on the desired aesthetic.

internal walls

The internal walls gain texture, volume and modernity with the cement coating.

There are numerous types of coating for the internal area of the house, ranging from 3D models to the simplest ones such as burnt cement.

internal floors

Cementitious coating has gained popularity as an internal floor, being used from living rooms and bedrooms, to bathrooms and kitchens.

In the monolithic form, it reveals clean, modern and minimalist environments, in the form of plates, the cement coating gives texture and a little more visual information to the environments.

care and maintenance

After installing the cementitious coating, it is recommended to wait about 72 hours before the first cleaning.

Then, to proceed with routine cleaning, use only water, neutral detergent and a soft cloth, both internally and externally. Vacuuming indoors will also help keep the floor dust free.

Just avoid the use of aggressive chemicals, as the cementitious coating is porous and can easily stain when exposed to certain types of product.
