Tunisian crochet is a blend of traditional crochet and knitting. The result is a true work of art.
It takes this name because it originated in Tunisia and, therefore, has its own specificities and attributions.
The needle used is a little different, but the way to use it is similar to using conventional needles.
And you don’t have to be afraid to take a risk on a new approach to stitches and compositions. The weave of this type of crochet , in general, is more closed and firm, with a unique beauty.
To start this type of craft with unmistakable crochet, some tips are fundamental. The technique consists of weaving rows back and forth, where the stitches are formed.

How is the Tunisian crochet hook?
The hook to use in Tunisian crochet is different from traditional crochet hooks. It’s called an Afghan hook, but you can order it at the store as a “Tunisian crochet hook”.
It has a hook at the end like a regular crochet hook, but is long like a knitting needle . There are several colors and thicknesses, to suit your taste and the types of threads/yarns.
These needles can also be made from a variety of materials such as aluminum, plastic or wood/bamboo.
How to do Tunisian crochet for beginners
Anyone who has experience with traditional crochet will have no difficulties with Tunisian crochet.
The way to loop the thread on the hook is the same, the difference is that after making the chains, you need to fill the hook with several loops.
These loops are suspended from the needle and kept on it until the end of each “back” row, before starting the stitches on the “outward” row.
Step by step
Start with the toothpick stitch that corresponds to the double loop, that is, pass the yarn through two loops that are suspended from the hook.
Pass the thread and pull, always two by two. Then start again the step of inserting the needle in the base loops to be able to suspend the loops/loops. The needle is full of loops along its entire length.
When you remove all the loops from the hook, fasten off by introducing the needle at the base of the toothpick stitch and then pass through the needle point until the end of the row.

Stick stitch in Tunisian crochet
The toothpick stitch is very basic and serves for other more elaborate stitches in Tunisian crochet. In short, pass the thread through the loops that are on the hook, two by two.
It ends up being the starting point for other stitches, such as the knit stitch and the honeycomb stitch. The plot is closed like most stitches of this type of crochet, so pay attention to the size of the stitches and their openings.

Knit stitch in Tunisian crochet
The first step to make this stitch is to start with the chains and the toothpick stitch. Then start the knitting stitch: loop the needle through the front and hold the yarn on the needle, insert the needle through the toothpick stitch and then through the needle stitch.
It’s very practical, similar to conventional knitting. In this way, intersperse the toothpick stitch with the knitting stitch and create beautiful pieces.
Honeycomb stitch in Tunisian crochet
When the stick stitch is finished, the needle on the “back” row pulls the loops up in an “x” shape. This is because the needle passes through two openings in the base points.
The two start loops and the end loops are not suspended from the hook in this shape, they are suspended normally. When passing the thread through the loops on the “outward” row, the process is the same: two by two.

Fancy stitch
This fantasy stitch is also very simple. After bringing the stitches up on the hook over the chains, thread the yarn through the first stitch.
In that first point, go up three more points (as if you were going to make a double crochet in traditional crochet) and, finally, pass the thread through the next three points that are on the hook. Repeat this until the end of the row and, to continue, bring the stitches up on the needle again.

Stockinette stitch in Tunisian crochet
Insert the hook in the middle of the base stitch and pull the yarn from the back.
Pull up and keep the loop on the hook, then take it out two at a time like in the stick stitch.
The stockinette stitch is filling the needle with loops in the row, after forming the base stitches.
Tailpiece
The finishing off at this point consists of inserting the needle in the same way, bringing the thread through the loops. The loops are not on the hook, the thread is already inside and the stitches are closed to then cut the thread at the end of the row.
This is a great Tunisian crochet stitch for thicker pieces, like winter clothes and bed/sofa throws. So, practice and get amazing results.
Tunisian crochet rug ideas
The weaves of Tunisian crochet are more closed and the pieces are firmer and less deformable, even after many washes.
In this way, the technique is ideal for cold weather clothes, such as socks, coats, sweatshirts, hats and scarves, but also works for bags and other accessories.
