But what is vintage anyway? Vintage is a style that became famous in fashion and decoration and that makes reference to everything that was in the past, more precisely between the 1920s and 1980s. But be careful: don’t confuse retro with vintage.
A vintage decoration is also a retro decoration, but a retro decoration is not always a vintage decoration. Got a knot in the head?
Calm down and we’ll explain. Vintage decoration is directly related to pieces and objects that actually belonged to the past, that is, they were produced and used at that time and, for one reason or another, survived and continue to occupy their space in decoration.
Retro decor, on the other hand, is made up of current objects produced with the appearance of furniture and appliances from yesteryear. In other words, they are reinterpretations of the past.
However, retro decoration allows new and old objects to share the same space, while an exclusively vintage decoration is formed only by old pieces, which may or may not be restored.
Both decoration proposals have their positive and negative sides. In retro decoration, furniture and appliances are easier to find, in addition to having the technology of current products, but on the other hand, they usually end up costing more than objects without this aesthetic appeal.
Vintage decor, on the other hand, can even be free if you have old pieces and objects from your grandparents’ time in your house or in your family’s house. However, if you don’t have anything similar, you’ll have to spend time and money to find pieces in thrift and antique shops, some of which can cost a small fortune.
When looking for vintage objects, keep in mind which place in the house will receive the decoration and how it will be complemented.
You can invest in typewriters, wall clocks, appliances such as mixers and blenders, armchairs, sofas, vinyl records, telephones, radios and TVs. Just be careful not to overdo it by putting too many pieces in the environment.
Also try to mix the proposals and add retro and vintage objects to the decor at the same time, or just use what you have on hand, giving that touch of discreet nostalgia to the environment.
The nostalgic proposal for decoration can be complemented with the use of a palette of pastel tones , which were the predominant colors at that time. Use them on walls and cabinets, for example, even if they have a more modern line.
Another tip is to invest in the “ do it yourself ” style for cheap and personalized vintage decor. Youtube is full of ideas to inspire you, but here are two suggestions to motivate you to create your own decor. Check out:
